Public Services took the opportunity whilst the snow was at its thickest to get as many of the students out to experience the colder side of hill walking in the Peak District at the beginning of this year. Prior to going out, students were required to plan all aspects of the activity including safety precautions, wearing the correct clothing, calculating routes and distance and using a map and compass competently. Nearly all of the 120+ students took part and all of them benefited in some way.

Amy Taylor, studying in her second year of her National Diploma, said “The hill walking experience was a really good way of putting into practice the theory that we learn back at college and it teaches you to prepare for severe conditions.”

Students soon realised that taking hot drinks and energy food is a much simpler idea than a tin of hot dogs and a tin opener.

The weather couldn’t have arrived at a better time to allow students to experience sub-zero temperatures and Gareth McDonough, course leader for Public Services said, “This is an excellent learning experience for the students and it also provides them with produce first hand experiences to use as evidence for assignments.”
