Library & Learning Services - Resources
The College has three Library and Learning Centres with over 50,000 books between
them. The books cover all curriculum areas within College as well as leisure interests
and general information such as telephone directories.
PleasePlease ask staff if you have problems locating information and books for your
coursework or assignments, it will save you time searching. A student access
catalogue is available.
Loans
Students registered at Ashton and Hyde can borrow 6 items at a time.
Books are available for a variety of loan periods; 1 day, 7 day, 14 day and 1 month.
Reference only books cannot be taken out of the Library. A book is made Reference
only when it is in high demand and it is important that a copy is available in the
Centre at all times.
Fines are charged on overdue books so return your books on time.
Renewals
Books can be renewed in person or by telephone providing the item has not been reserved
by another user. If a book has been on loan to someone for a long time we reserve
the right to refuse renewal. This enables students and staff to have fair access
to materials.
Videos
Video recordings and viewing facilities are available in the LLCs. Videocassettes
are displayed alongside books covering the same subject. Subjects include Shakespeare
plays, drama, engineering, languages, sport, travel, and use of computer software.
Most videos can be taken out using your student ID card.
Reservations
Reservations can be made if a book you require is on loan. We will let you know
when the item becomes available. Ask a member of staff for assistance.
IT Facilities
There are bookable networked PC's offering Microsoft - Word-Processing, Spreadsheets,
Database and Presentation packages. There is Open Internet access and the opportunity
to surf the college Intranet for information on all your assignment and course work.
The Library Information and Learning centres also house an expanding CD-ROM collection
including the major newspapers - Times, Guardian, Financial Times plus subject specific
titles including - Bodyworks, Encarta, Marketing Mix, New Scientist and Art Gallery.
