How to Stand Out at Your Interview

  1. Do some research on the College and the course(s) you have chosen. Having done this you will have a better idea of how the course fits with your career plans. You will also feel more confident about the interview and able to answer any questions that a course tutor may ask.
  2. Make sure that you know how to get to the College for your interview. You will find a map to Hyde Clarendon Sixth Form College on this website.
  3. It is important that you arrive at least 10 minutes early for your interview as this will both calm your nerves and make a good impression.
  4. Save a contact number for the college in your phone or write it down, then, if the worst comes to the worst and you think you may arrive late, you will be able to contact the college and let them know.
  5. Practise your journey to the college – you will be less nervous on the day and know exactly how long it will take to get the College.
  6. Prepare – Write down your reasons for choosing the college and reasons why you want to do the course, this will help you to remember them on the day.
  7. If you have been asked to bring anything that was not stated on the ‘Interview Checklist’ on our ‘Interview Tips’ leaflet, add them to the list yourself and remember to make sure you have everything on the list before you leave for your interview.
  8. It is very important that you arrive at your interview well presented. You only have one chance to make that all important first impression! Dress smart/casual and remember, the interviewer will not be impressed by your aftershave or make-up.
  9. Speak clearly throughout and listen carefully to the interviewer. When answering a question take your time to think about your answer and avoid yes or no answers.
  10. Ask questions – feel free to ask any question you have about the College or the course, this shows that you are keen and have prepared. We want you to go away from the interview knowing everything that you need to, so don’t worry if you think that your question seems trivial.
  11. Sometimes the simplest rules are the most effective, so be aware of your posture, sit up straight and keep eye-contact with your interviewer. Show that you have good manners, shake the tutors hand if appropriate and greet them with a clear ‘Good morning, Good afternoon or Good Evening’. If you follow these simple tips, you’ll have a great chance of getting the place on the course that you want.
