Sociology - AS/A2

Sociology is the study of human social life in groups. Study of society (the central focus of sociology) means exploring aspects of group identity such as social class, ethnicity, gender and age. Also we explore themes of social life such as marriage, religion, wealth/poverty, etc differ according to social group.

For example is marriage as the basis of adult family life a thing of the past? Does more freedom to express our gender identity cause social problems? Do the violent images in the media create violence in society? Have you got any questions of your own about society and social change? How would you go about exploring them? To effectively explore such questions, the successful sociologist requires an open mind and an ability to understand social situations beyond personal experiences.

Sociology combines well with psychology, law, media studies and other humanities areas. You do not need to study sociology at GCSE to do the course but you must have grade C or above in English Language.
