BTEC Level 1 in Public Services

No formal qualifications are required but a range of GCSEs grades E to F would be beneficial. This course is suitable if you are considering a career in uniformed Public Service, the Armed Forces, the Police, the Prison Service, HM Revenue and Customs, the Ambulance and Paramedic Services or the Fire and Rescue Service. The course gives an introduction to the broad range of public services, encouraging self development and confidence building for both individual and team situations.

  • Health and Fitness in the Public Services

As well as learning about the Public Services, you will be given the chance to develop your maths, english and ICT skills. This course will give you an introduction into the work done in the public services and will help to gain the skills necessary to progress onto a Level 2 course in Public Services.

BTEC Level 2 in Public Services

The Level 2 Diploma in Public Services is a one year course aimed at learners who have achieved a minimum of 4 GCSE passes at grade D including Maths or English. It is internally assessed so doesn’t include any exams and has some practical elements.

The units covered include a sample of:

  • Public Services Skills
  • Employment in the Uniformed Public Services
  • Improving Health and Fitness for Entry into the Uniformed Public Services

This course will give you the underpinning knowledge of the above areas in public services and will enable you to progress on to the Level 3 Public Services course.

BTEC Level 3 Ext Diploma in Public Services

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services has been specifically designed as preparation for those interested in pursuing a career within a Public or Emergency Service e.g. Police, Fire, Ambulance Service, the Armed Forces, Prison Service and HM Revenue and Customs. The programme has an excellent reputation for being forward thinking and creative. The course aims to develop an awareness of the public services in general and the roles they play in society. You will develop an awareness of the wider political and social issues that impact upon the public services both in a national and international situation. You will prepare physically and mentally for the stresses of working in this sector. Physical fitness, communication and problem solving skills are important to this area. Emphasis will be put on a practical approach to the course wherever possible.The course includes visits, guest speakers, team building, practical sessions, an expedition and outdoor activity residentials.

The following units are a sample of those covered:

  • Government Policies and the Public Services.
  • Fitness Testing and Training for the Public Services.
  • Leadership and Teamwork in the Public Services.
  • Skills for Land Based activities.
  • Skills for Water Based activities.
  • Crime and its effects on Society.
  • Planning and Management of Major Incidents.


For entry to the course you will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs grades A*-C including Maths and English, high levels of
motivation and a good standard of physical fitness. If progressing from a BTEC First Diploma an overall merit grade is a minimum requirement. This course will give you the opportunity
to progress into the armed forces, emergency services and progress to university.
