BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Performing Arts

This course provides a mixture of practical activities as well as the completion of some more formal elements. The aim of the course is to develop a greater understanding of the arts exploring different employment opportunities and the skills required to enter these professions. You will take part in dance and drama sessions allowing you the chance to develop these skills further. The BTEC Level 1 is a recognised qualification which, on successful completion, will give you the opportunity to further specialise in one or more of your chosen subjects on the level 2 programme. Your enthusiasm, energy and commitment will take you a long way.

BTEC First Diploma in Dance/Drama

This course provides the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of two art forms. Four GCSE's grades D-G are required for entry to this course as well as showing an interest/ability in Performing Arts. All students will study both dance and drama on the course. The main focus of the course is to develop skills suitable for employment within the performing arts industry as well as developing personal skills at the same time.

Communication, co-operation and team building are all essential attributes within the industry. The course provides the opportunity to explore issues through drama with an emphasis on practical group activities.The course is a recognised qualification which should allow for progression onto a specialist National Diploma in Dance or Drama.

National Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting)

This course explores the practice, theories and purposes of theatre and drama in both contemporary and historical contexts. You will be given a range of opportunities to explore and develop practical skills and understanding through improvisation, text and devised performances. You will be encouraged to bring a professional approach to your work and develop your physical technique.

You need to be a good team member. All students will be encouraged to take part in a range of practical activities as well as developing the academic skills required in order to complete the course. It is hoped that on completion of the course you will be equipped with skills relevant to entering the profession or for entry to Higher Education to continue your studies. 

National Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance)

This course is predominantly a practical dance course which offers the opportunity to study different dance styles including contemporary and jazz. This course is aimed at school leavers and mature students who want to specialise in Dance. You will be expected to take part in core units such as Performance Workshop, the Performing Arts Business, Performing Arts in Context, Rehearsing and Performing.

Specialist dance units in Contemporary dance, choreography, physical theatre, dance improvisation, movement, dance performance, the freelance world and jazz will form the basis of your course. Individual contribution is an important part of the course with strong emphasis on personal development in communication skills and working with others.

It is intended that this course will equip you with the skills intended to enter into the profession after successful completion of the course or to progress onto Higher Education to continue with your dance studies. 

Drama & Theatre Studies AS & A2

This subject looks at all aspects of theatre including acting, directing, design of set, costume and lighting. Our close links with theatre companies enable students to work with top directors, designers and actors preparing them for the challenges they will meet in their own productions. Theatre visits are a vital part of the course and as well as our regular trips to local productions we have annual trips to The Globe Theatre and Theatre Museum in London. While it is not necessary to have studied Drama before, a minimum Grade C in GCSE English Language is required.
