AS & A2 Physical Education
Physical Education focuses on sports coaching, officiating and
performing in today’s society. Students find the course enjoyable
and interesting where they are keen to discuss, participate and
learn about the Physical Education disciplines.
Some of the topics studied include E.G. Anatomy and how the
body functions in sports activities; Sport Psychology including the
concept of learning and mental preparation for sport; Sport
Sociology including sport in society and its influence on culture
and history. Where possible these theoretical areas are taught in a
practical situation. Also in addition to these areas, students are
assessed coaching, performing and officiating sports activities.
Entry Requirements: A Level Physical Education requires you to
achieve a minimum of 5 A-C GCSE grades (including English and
Maths). In addition, applicants should also provide a reference
demonstrating a committed approach to one of the following
roles: a performer, an official &/ or a coach.
BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport
The Level 2 Diploma in Sport is a one year course aimed at
learners who achieve a minimum of 4 A-D grades at GCSE. These
must include Maths or English. It is internally assessed so doesn't
include external exams and has some practical elements. The
units covered include the following:
- Fitness Testing and Training
- Practical Sport
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Injury in Sport
- Sports Development
- Planning and Leading Sport
- Work Experience in the Sports Industry
This course will give you the underpinning knowledge of the
above areas in sport and will enable you to progress onto a Level
3 Sport course providing you meet the minimum requirements.
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport
The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport has an emphasis on sport
development, coaching and exercise fitness. It is a two year full
time course that is equivalent of 3 A Level grades.
The following units are a sample of those covered:
- Principles of Anatomy & Physiology in Sport
- Assessing Risk in Sport
- Sports Coaching
- Leadership in Sport
- Work-based experience in Sport
- Instructing Physical Activity and Exercise
- Organising Sports Events
- Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise.
The entry requirements for this course are a minimum of 5 A-C
GCSE grades including Maths and English, and Science is also
preferred. (If you have completed a First Diploma in Sport you
must have achieved a minimum of overall MERIT). Science is also
preferred due to Anatomy & Physiology aspects of the course at
this level.
This course will give you the opportunity and experience to work
in the Sport Coaching and Development field, progress onto
university and pursue careers such as Sports Development
Officer, Sport teacher, Fitness and Exercise Instructor and many
more.

Studied: BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport
Bethany is a popular student who takes part in
many enrichment activities including, Football,
Badminton, Softball, Basketball, and Netball. She
participated in a college trip to Italy and took part
in a one mile charity run for Comic Relief.
Bethany comments, “I chose to come to Hyde
