The English staff at Hyde Clarendon are well qualified and passionate about their subject, Master Classes are delivered to local school pupils to generate enthusiasm and love of English.
Students go on a variety of theatre trips to places such as the Globe Theatre in London and the Lowry in Salford. English Language students attend dedicated lecture and revision days at Sheffield and Manchester Universities and are encouraged to get involved in the college magazine.
To take English AS courses, applicants must have a minimum grade C from higher level GCSE English.
English Combined AS and A2
If your interest in English is wide-ranging, this course can combine the best of
all worlds, a chance to write creatively, to read stories, plays and poetry, and
to learn about and analyse how language works in a variety of situations from writing
for children to soap-opera scripting from advertisements to autobiography.
Over the two years you will:
- Study four main literary texts as well as many extracts
- Learn how spoken English differs from written
- Try your hand at various editorial tasks, adapting material
for new purposes
- Have the chance to do your own writing, both fiction and non-fiction
English Language - AS/A2
If you have a keen interest in how English is used in everyday life, this is the
course for you.
You will study a wide range of texts from short stories to the language of chat
rooms. You will gain an insight into the changes the English language has seen over
the years and understand how children acquire language.
Over a two-year period you will:
- Study various texts
- Do your own writing both fiction and non-fiction

Learn about the relationship between language use and society
- Gain an understanding
into how children learn English
- Create your own writing by adapting materials
for new purposes
- Have the opportunity to research your own language topic investigations
Teaching is varied and study days and visits will make English
most accessible and enjoyable.
English Literature - AS/A2
This is a wide ranging course in terms of both the choice of texts
and the ways in which they are studied and assessed. AS and A2
both consist of one examined and one course assessed module.
The AS examination covers Modern Poetry and Drama, while for
the coursework portfolio, students study the work of prose writers
and produce their own piece of creative rewriting.
The A2 examined module covers pre 1800 poetry and
Shakespeare and his contemporaries, while the coursework allows
you to compare and contrast 3 texts of different types.
