Choosing your course
To help you choose the right course, we have provided you and your parents with a brief summary about each of the types of courses we offer.
GCSEs
These are well-known qualifications, but at College they are taken over 1 year. Maths, and English can be taken alongside Applied A levels, A/AS levels or BTECs.
A/AS Levels
These are traditional academic qualifications which give specialist indepth knowledge of a subject. Most courses have a formal examination and course work. Students can combine a range of AS and A level study to achieve the appropriate mix for University entrance or employment.
Applied A levels
These courses provide a good background and specific skills for a vocational area. The Applied A level programme is mainly assignment based and can be combined with A or AS level study. Students would normally undertake some form of work experience as part of this course. Applied A levels provide a direct route into university or employment. Applied A levels are the equivalent of two A Levels.
BTEC National Awards
Certificates and Diplomas are like Applied A levels. These courses provide a vocational route for students wanting to progress onto higher education or employment. Students study at a number of levels depending on GCSE results with the full Diploma running over 2 years and equates to 3 A levels. Students can combine A levels, if taking the Certificate (worth 2 A levels) or Award (worth 1 A level).
BTEC First Diploma
These courses provide a good foundation for many students wishing to follow a particular vocational route. The programme runs for 1 year and can lead onto the Applied A levels and BTEC National Diplomas. Most work is assignment based and you will develop practical skills.
BTEC Introductory Certificate and Diploma
These courses provide an opportunity for students who have fewer than 4 grades D at GCSE to progress. Courses last for one year and work is assignment based. Students can progress onto Intermediate programmes.
